also in Bar Mitzvah prep mode and fully agree -- and it comes at such an important time in their development when this tether to something

ancient and a bit strange is such a nice counterbalance to everything else.

Yes itโ€™s exactly that!

I have a boy prepping too! In PA, which is weird and isolating in addition to being that counterbalance...

I loved this story and am grateful you shared it. It also struck me as so sad that there even needs to be a qualifier about getting political because of this sacred tradition you are sharing. I guess it speaks to where we are as a polarized society right now. Anyway, thanks for sharingโ€”my daughter also

went through this, and it was profoundly meaningful for her and all of us in her family. An

incredible tradition.

I love to hear this so much!

I am always so happy to read your writing. This entire post reminded me of the Buddhist slogan โ€œAbandon any hope of result.โ€ Much love and respect. May this year bear great fruit for N and for you.

I love this, and you! And thank you, friend. xoxoxo

Love this, Abby! Freddi memorizes and recites scripture every week at Holy Cross and will be confirmed in the communion ritual later in the year... I love how out of step it is with everything else the world seems to teach. Thanks for so poignantly describing this!

โ€œThere are no clear applicationsโ€ really resonated w me as it feels antithetical to modern parenting but really this is such a powerful lesson to show our kids. There is beauty and joy and meaning in doing something just because. Loved this post (we are 1 yr behind you in this process).

Abby Rasminsky's avatar

It feels so vitally important right now, to slow down and do something that's not about all the tricky, sticky things that ultimately try to make your kid...better???

Also have a 12 yr old (boy) preparing for Bar Mitzvah. I'm in a tiny place w barely any Jews -a huge shift from mnyc where we moved from-and he's the only kid! And it's difficult here in this climate-it feels lonely as we don't have a Jewish community really and I don't love the synagogue. The rabbi is great, so are those lessons. Loved reading this...

Abby Rasminsky's avatar

That's so hard to be on the journey alone. So glad the rabbi is great! That's something...As well as the many, many kids going through it around the world...xxxx

I love this. Yes, I too found that right around that age my kids suddenly knew so much that I didn't and could do so many things that were beyond my ability. Yes, miraculous. Yes, becoming bar/t mitzvah happens at the just the right time.

By the way your novel will sell-- I'm going to buy it.
