Well, hello! And welcome to Poems + Prompts. I’m so happy you’re here to do a little reading and writing.

This week, we will read a poem by Kathleen Flenniken. I love this piece because it speaks — in a sort of sideways way — to the complications of marriage and desire and the secrets only adults can understand. It also plays with perspective in such a thrilling way (the speaker telling a story from her adolescence, perhaps understanding it more completely as the adult poet). Notice, too, that it’s in couplets.
